By the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, businesses started offering store charge accounts. Department stores and fuel companies were among the first to let customers make purchases throughout the month before paying the full balance later. While convenient for regular shoppers, these accounts could only be used at the business that issued them.
The Arrival of the First Credit Card
A major turning point came in 1950 with the introduction of the Diners Club Card in the United States. According to the well-known story, businessman Frank McNamara forgot his wallet while dining at a restaurant in New York City. The experience inspired him to create a payment card that would allow customers to dine and pay later without carrying cash.
Unlike earlier store accounts, the Diners Club Card could be used at several participating restaurants and businesses. Cardholders paid their balance every month, while merchants paid a small processing fee. The idea proved successful almost immediately, attracting thousands of members during its first year and introducing a completely new way to pay.
